CELEBRATIONS THIS WEEKEND FRI. FEB. 14 - SUN FEB. 16
HAPPY 60th ANNIVERSARY TO THE FLAG OF CANADA
50TH Anniversary of the Beaver as the official symbol of Canada
45th Anniversary of our National Anthem

This year, we’re celebrating not one, not two, but THREE major anniversaries!
  1. In addition to the 60th anniversary of our flag,
  2. We’re also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the beaver as an official symbol of Canada AND
  3. The 45th anniversary of our national anthem!
Here’s a bit of history about one of our famous official symbols, the beaver!
The beaver played a key role in the Canadian identity well before it became an official symbol in 1975. It was on the very first Canadian postage stamp in 1851 and appears on First Nations totem poles.
For many Indigenous communities, the beaver symbolizes resilience and ingenuity.

The FES says the federal government is putting Canadian hero Terry Fox on the new $5 bill to honour his Marathon of Hope and his efforts to raise money for cancer research.
"By February 1981, the Marathon of Hope had raised $24.7 million or $1 for every Canadian," the FES says. "His run was interrupted just past the half-way point when the cancer reached his lungs, and ultimately took his life.
"Through his efforts, the 22-year-old showed Canadians the difference that an ordinary person could make through sheer willpower and determination."
Former Liberal prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier will be moved from the $5 bank bill to the next version of Canada's $50 bill.       https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/fall-economic-statement-five-things-1.7411901

TERRY FOX CC OD
b. July 28, 1958 - June 28, 1981 died aged 22 years

Terrance Stanley Fox CC OD (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. In 1980, having had one leg amputated due to cancer, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$850 million has been raised in his name as of September 2022.[1]
Fox was a distance runner and basketball player for his high school, now named after him, and Simon Fraser University. His right leg was amputated in 1977 after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, though he
continued to run using an artificial leg. He also played wheelchair basketball in Vancouver, winning three national championships.
In 1980, he began the Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. He hoped to raise one dollar from each of Canada's 24 million people. He began with little fanfare from
St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, in April and ran the equivalent of a full marathon every day. Fox had become a national star by the time he reached Ontario; he made numerous public appearances with businessmen, athletes, and politicians in his efforts to raise money. He was forced to end his run outside Thunder Bay when the cancer spread to his lungs. His hopes of overcoming the disease and completing his run ended when he died nine months later.

An award for black medical students honours a Toronto surgeon
By Scott Anderson March 21, 2012

With her family, Beverley created the Dr. J. Douglas Salmon Award for Black Medical Students in honour of her late husband. Douglas graduated from medicine at U of T in 1955, after earning a BA in 1951 https://magazine.utoronto.ca/.../douglas-salmon-award.../
Beverley Salmon: “Douglas was born in 1923, the youngest of six children. His mother and father both died when he was a child, and a widowed aunt took in all of the children. She had been trained as a nurse, but because of racism at that time was unable to
work as one. They had very little money.

Douglas was channelled into “commercial” courses in high school. He graduated at the top of his class, but wanted to attend university – so he went back to high school for two years in the evenings to get the subjects he needed. He worked during the day.
At U of T, he was one of only four black students in his medical school class. He received a scholarship, but to cover his expenses he also worked part-time. In second year, he was voted class president.
His family and friends knew what a struggle it was for him to pay his way through university. We also knew how much he benefited from the scholarship he received: he went on to become a very successful surgeon. We wanted to extend the same opportunity to students today.
Douglas and the other black medical students in his class really had to assert themselves to get a good placement, even though they all graduated in the top third of their class. I think even today black students have to prove themselves by working harder.”

MAYORAL BY ELECTION SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 26, 2023

Dear Friends and Neighbours,
Earlier this month, Mayor John Tory announced that he would be resigning as of February 17. Effective immediately, Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie will assume many of the duties and responsibilities of the Mayor, which include presiding over City Council meetings and representing the City at official functions. We have been advised by the City Clerk that the Deputy Mayor will not be permitted to exercise the "Strong Mayor powers" set out in Provincial Bills 3 and 39. You can find more information about the mayoral transition process on the City's website, here.
At the upcoming March 29 meeting, City Council will declare the Office of the Mayor vacant and initiate a by-election. Once a by-election has been initiated, the Municipal Elections Act requires a window of 30 to 60 days for mayoral candidates to file their nomination papers, and for the by-election to be held 45 days after nominations close. In order for the City to begin recruiting election staff and booking voting locations as soon as possible, the City Clerk has set the date for the by-election as Monday, June 26, 2023.
