Jillia Cato is an Afro-Indo-Caribbean performer and artist from Trinidad and Tobago. Jillia holds a dear passion for the cultural expressions of her homeland through dance, music, song and storytelling. Though trained in various classical forms with a BFA in the Performing arts, her practice is rooted within her folkloric and carnival performance. Jillia will be performing Jillia Cato will be performing a Trinidadian dance connecting to past ancestors, accompanied by Derek Thorne.
Derek Thorne was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. Derek’s versatility has made him a staple percussionist in Toronto’s music scene as a dance class accompanist, clinician, and sideman. Derek will be accompanying Jillia Cato’s dance performance with drumming. W’ dae b’ wae is an Anishinaabe artist, craftsman, musician, writer, storyteller, educator, and canoe builder. He has built birch bark and wood canvas canoes and signs his work with the name "W’ dae b’ wae," given to him by the late Elder Art Solomon, meaning "he or she is telling the truth." Through his art, he shares Anishinaabe culture, teachings, and traditions. W’ dae b’ wae will be sharing Anishinaabe traditions around death and mourning. |
Margaret Maria and Tréson are a singing-songwriting duo. Margaret Maria is a cellist and composer and Tréson is a renowned Toronto soul and reggae singer. Together they aim for social change in their music, and released their first single “Music Can Change the World” in 2023. They will be performing this song as part of the After Dark: Spirit Tour at Todmorden Mills.
Jennifer Bettencourt is a Luso-Canadian fadista that accidentally, but happily, tumbled into the world of fado after attempting to push it away for most of her life. Ever since walking through that door, fado is all she thinks about and she's never looked back. It's now time for her to bring fado into the future. Jennifer will be performing “Folhas no Vento/Leaves on the Wind.” Tony White has been acting & singing professionally for more than 40 years, and is very proud to be a part of this worthwhile production. Tony was the very first host of the “Ghosts of Stratford Walking Tour“ as Dr. Emanuel Blood, in Stratford Ontario, and is very pleased to bring his voice, and storytelling acumen, to After Dark: Spirit Tours at Todmorden Mills. Hope to see you there! |

MIKE ORMSBY
is an Anishinaabe artist, craftsman, musician, writer, storyteller, outdoor educator, and canoe builder. For many years, he concentrated on building birch bark and wood canvas canoes. But recently Mike has returned to music (even starting up a recording studio appropriately called STUDIO JIIMAAN) while still continuing with visual art. He signs his art work as "W’ dae b’ wae", the Anishinaabe name given to me by the late Elder Art Solomon. The meaning of 'w' dae b' wae' is “he or she is telling the truth, is right, is correct, is accurate.” Mike hopes his artwork speaks to that same truth. Through his art, he tries to share Anishinaabe culture, teachings and traditions. Mike’s family is from Curve Lake First Nation. |

This is an exhibit on the outside of the Papermill Building. |
